#ArtsMakers Artist of the Katerina Kirilova!

Hi! My name is Katerina and I’m an illustrator and pattern designer from Bulgaria.

A.C– How did you become an illustrator/Artist?

I’ve been drawing since I was a child, I studied art in high school, but I started my career as illustrator 9 years ago making illustrations for microstock sites.

A.C-How long have you been an illustrator/Artist?

9 years 🙂

A.C-Do you think an illustrator/Artist needs a style? Why? Do you have tips on developing an style?

Yes, I do. Your style is like a signature, this is something that people recognize.  Tip: try different styles to see what works best for you.

A.C-Could you describe your creative process?

It’s messy, my head is full of ideas to draw, I pick one and start drawing. Sometimes I continue working on the drawing, sometimes I pick a new idea and so on and so on. I have a few folders named”unfinished” with forgotten projects on my computer. But basically I draw my elements or whole artwork on paper with ink, then take a photo and place it in Illustrator, then redraw, refine, color the elements and finally make a pattern. The same is with watercolors, recently I found a few watercolor painting of apple fruits that I painted last year to make a pattern. I had totally forgotten about them.

A.C-What part of your life is reflected in your illustrations?

My love for nature.

A.C-What would you say is your strongest skill?

Desire to learn.

A.C Which is your favorite piece of art from your own designs? Why?

A.C -What are you passionate about besides your work?

A.C -What do you consider your greatest achievement?

Being a full-time freelance illustrator.

A.C- What advice would you give to up-and-coming illustrators?

To work hard and be consistent.

Wake up, feed the cats, coffee, jog(or work), breakfast, work, lunch, work, walk(or workout), work, dinner for me and the cats, work(or movie) sleep
